Title: Lead Engineering Manager

Location: Ahmedabad

Reporting to: Head – Engineering & Design

Salary: 25-30 LPA

Role Overview

The Lead Engineering Manager – Solar will spearhead the detailed design, system engineering, and grid integration of utility-scale solar PV projects. The role encompasses managing the entire engineering lifecycle — from conceptual and detailed design to technical review, quality assurance, and commissioning readiness.

This position requires close collaboration with internal teams (Project Execution, O&M, HSSE, and Supply Chain) and external stakeholders (consultants, EPCs, and utilities) to ensure all engineering deliverables comply with project specifications, regulatory requirements, and performance expectations.

The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in solar PV, substations, and transmission systems, with proven experience in multi-disciplinary engineering coordination and design optimization.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical and System Design
- Lead and review conceptual, basic, and detailed electrical designs for solar PV plants, substations, and transmission lines.
- Develop and validate Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), AC/DC schematics, cable routing, earthing, lightning protection, and protection/control drawings.
- Perform PV module and string sizing, SMB calculations, and compare module datasheets with IEC/UL certifications.
- Review and validate PVsyst-compatible files (.PAN, .OND) with manufacturer specifications.
- Size central and string inverters; assess datasheets and verify certifications.
- Define and review technical specifications and design criteria for major equipment (modules, inverters, transformers, switchgear, etc.).
- Ensure designs comply with CEA, CERC, and IS/IEC standards.
- Prepare detailed BOQs and basic market costing; perform preliminary PR and availability calculations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of substation design up to 220 kV and basic PPC/SCADA functionalities.

Grid Integration and Interconnection Engineering
- Conduct grid connectivity studies (load flow, short circuit, reactive power, voltage profile, etc.).
- Define interface and system configuration requirements to ensure stable and reliable operation under varying grid conditions.
- Design and review SCADA, metering, communication, and protection systems for compliance with grid codes.
- Support testing and commissioning with technical inputs on protection settings and system behaviour.

Design Review and Quality Assurance
- Review EPC and third-party designs for alignment with technical specifications and engineering best practices.
- Drive design optimization for efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness (e.g., LCOE reduction).
- Conduct design risk assessments and implement corrective measures during design and construction.
- Oversee Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and approve key equipment based on performance and quality standards.
- Evaluate vendor technical offers and provide clear feedback for commercial negotiations with SCM teams.

Interdepartmental Coordination and Technical Governance
- Provide engineering support to Project Execution and O&M teams during construction and operation.
- Standardize design templates, checklists, and quality procedures across projects.
- Support Business Development by performing technical feasibility, optimal BOQ preparation, and costing for tenders.
- Stay updated with market trends, equipment ratings, and IPP project models.
- Collaborate with HSSE to integrate safety and risk mitigation into designs.
- Participate in pre-bid engineering, preparing BOQs and design inputs per tender requirements, attending pre-bid meetings, and resolving technical queries to enable compliant bid submissions.

Team Leadership and Technical Development
- Lead and mentor a team of electrical design engineers, ensuring high technical standards and efficient project delivery.
- Promote continuous learning, technical excellence, and knowledge sharing.
- Interface with external consultants and technology providers to benchmark and integrate new methodologies.
- Drive internal design review committees and design assurance processes.
- Oversee all projects won by the organization, ensuring timely and quality deliverables.

Qualifications and Experience Education:

B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or any other relevant higher education

Experience:

8–12 years in design and engineering of utility-scale solar PV plants, substations, and transmission systems.
Proven expertise in high-voltage systems, substation design, and plant-level protection/control systems.
Strong exposure to power system studies and design validation.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in PVsyst, Helios 3D, ETAP, AutoCAD, and MS Office Suite.
Familiarity with CEA regulations, MNRE guidelines, and Indian Electricity Rules.
Knowledge of IEC/IS standards for PV modules, transformers, and switchgear.
Experience with BESS design and integration into solar systems (preferred).
