Purpose of the Role
The Junior Breeder – Corn will support the planning and execution of corn breeding activities for rainy-season environments under the guidance of the Senior Breeder and R&D leadership. The role involves field operations, trial management, data analysis, germplasm improvement, and coordination of breeding activities to support the development of high-performing corn hybrids.
Key Responsibilities
1. Breeding Program Support
Support the development and advancement of high-yielding corn hybrids for rainy-season environments.
Execute breeding activities aligned with regional business and market requirements.
Assist in maintaining a strong pipeline of innovative hybrids for different market segments.
Participate in breeding nursery management, crossing programs, and hybrid evaluation activities.
2. Germplasm & Technology Integration
Support germplasm improvement and inbred line development activities.
Assist in integrating advanced breeding technologies into breeding programs.
Participate in evaluation and selection of breeding populations and trial materials.
3. Field Operations & SOP Compliance
Ensure adherence to breeding SOPs, company policies, and operational protocols.
Coordinate field activities including sowing, planting, pollination, harvesting, and data collection.
Train and guide field staff on best practices for breeding operations.
Monitor field execution to maintain quality, consistency, and accuracy.
4. Data Management & Analysis
Collect, validate, and maintain nursery and trial data using PRISM and other breeding data management systems.
Ensure timely and accurate data uploads and documentation.
Conduct basic statistical and breeding data analysis to support selection decisions.
5. Trial & Product Development Support
Create and manage SPR1 trials within PRISM.
Coordinate with SPR Managers for trial planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting.
Ensure timely availability of genetically pure hybrid seed material for trials and screening nurseries.
6. Seed Inventory & Material Management
Manage breeder seed inventory, inbred lines, and breeding populations as per defined protocols.
Support seed handoff and inventory tracking activities while ensuring genetic purity standards.
7. Quality, Compliance & Safety
Ensure compliance with Quality Assurance (QA) standards and Environment, Safety & Health (ESH) guidelines.
Maintain accurate documentation and operational discipline across breeding activities.
Follow safety protocols during field and research operations.
8. Professional Conduct & Collaboration
Maintain confidentiality of breeding materials, research data, and project information.
Collaborate effectively with breeding, field operations, data management, and research teams.
Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and teamwork in daily operations.
Qualifications
M.Sc. Agriculture in Genetics & Plant Breeding or related specialization.
Ph.D. in Plant Breeding is preferred.
4–5 years of experience in corn breeding or related crop breeding programs.
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of plant breeding principles and corn breeding methodologies.
Knowledge of crop management and field breeding operations.
Familiarity with breeding data systems such as PRISM or similar platforms.
Strong analytical and data management skills.
Attention to detail and quality-focused approach.
Good communication and team collaboration skills.
Ability to work in field-based research environments and manage operational activities effectively.
