Title: Project Design Manager / Design Specialist
Location: Ahmedabad
Department: Design & Engineering
Reporting to: Lead Engineering Manager
Salary: 13-16 LPA
Role Overview
The Project Design Manager – Solar will support the detailed design, system engineering, and grid integration of utility- scale solar PV projects. The role involves executing electrical designs, preparing technical documentation, and coordinating with internal teams and vendors to ensure timely delivery of high-quality engineering outputs.
The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise in solar PV systems, substations, and grid-connected projects, with experience in multi-disciplinary coordination and adherence to industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical and System Design
Support the preparation and review of conceptual, basic, and detailed electrical designs for solar PV plants, substations, and transmission systems.
Prepare Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), AC/DC schematics, cable routing, earthing, lightning protection, and protection/control drawings.
Perform PV module and string sizing, inverter sizing, and verify datasheets against IEC/UL certifications.
Review and validate PVsyst-compatible files (.PAN, .OND) with manufacturer specifications.
Develop technical specifications, datasheets, and design criteria for electrical equipment.
Ensure designs comply with CEA, CERC, and IS/IEC standards.
Prepare BOQs and support preliminary costing and PR/availability calculations.
Grid Integration and Interconnection Engineering
Assist in conducting grid connectivity studies (load flow, short circuit, reactive power, voltage profile).
Support SCADA, metering, communication, and protection system design for grid compliance.
Provide technical inputs during testing and commissioning of electrical systems.
Design Review and Quality Assurance
Review designs prepared by EPCs or third-party consultants for technical compliance.
Support design optimization initiatives for plant efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
Assist in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and equipment validation.
Evaluate vendor technical submissions and provide feedback to Lead Engineering Manager.
Coordination and Documentation
Collaborate with Project Execution, O&M, HSSE, and Supply Chain teams to resolve design queries.
Maintain and update design templates, engineering checklists, and documentation standards.
Assist in preparing technical inputs for tenders and BOQ evaluation.
Stay updated with market trends, equipment ratings, and regulatory requirements.
Participate in pre-bid engineering, preparing BOQs and design inputs per tender requirements, attending pre-bid meetings, and resolving technical queries to enable compliant bid submissions.
Technical Development and Support
Take ownership of complete Solar project lifecycle — from pre-bid design through detailed engineering, installation support, and as-built documentation.
Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on technical deliverables.
Participate in internal design reviews and assurance processes.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or any other relevant higher education.
Experience:
5–9 years of relevant experience in electrical design and engineering for utility-scale solar PV projects.
Strong technical background in DC/AC systems, power distribution, protection, and control design.
Proven experience in design documentation, validation, and inter-discipline coordination.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, Helios 3D, and ETAP (or similar tools).
Familiarity with CEA regulations, MNRE guidelines, and IS/IEC standards related to solar plant design.
Understanding of plant SCADA interfaces, transformer sizing, and medium-voltage system design.
Preferred Attributes:
Experience in solar EPC or design consultancy environments.
Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to manage multiple design deliverables and mentor junior team members effectively.
