Job Description

Job Title: Project Design Manager / Design Specialist

Location: Ahmedabad

Department: Design & Engineering

Reporting to: Lead Engineering Manager

Salary: 12-15 LPA

Role Overview

The Project Design Manager – BESS will lead the detailed electrical design and technical validation for utility-scale, C&I BESS projects. The role involves independent design, review, and optimization of electrical systems, mentorship of junior engineers, and ensuring all designs meet technical standards, project requirements, and safety norms.

This position acts as a technical leader within the electrical design team, bridging the gap between junior engineers and the lead engineer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical System Design & Optimization
    • Possess in-depth technical expertise in BESS design and operation, including microgrids, standalone systems, grid- forming capabilities, and seamless transition functionalities.
    • Lead battery sizing and capacity estimation using project-specific load profiles for residential, commercial & industrial (C&I), and utility-scale applications.
    • Develop and validate Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, cable sizing, protection schemes, and auxiliary systems for BESS installations.
    • Design and optimize battery enclosure configurations (cabinet, containerized, or building-integrated) ensuring safety, thermal management, and ease of maintenance.
    • Conduct battery lifecycle simulations, degradation modelling, and augmentation scheduling to ensure long-term performance and cost optimization.
    • Provide design inputs on Power Conversion Systems (PCS), including sizing, AC/DC coupling configurations, bidirectional inverter operation, and DC/DC converter integration.
    • Demonstrate working knowledge of outdoor switchgear (up to 33 kV), relay coordination, and transformer sizing.
    • Develop SLDs up to 220 kV or point of interconnection with utilities.
    • Exhibit understanding of Energy Management Systems (EMS), Plant Power Controllers (PPC), and SCADA architectures.
    • Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs) with a sound understanding of prevailing market equipment costs.
    • Calculate Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE), availability, and system performance metrics.
  • Modeling, Simulation & Performance Analysis
    • Conduct BESS performance modelling using software tools such as MATLAB, HOMER, DigSILENT, ETAP, or PSCAD.
    • Optimize battery dispatch profiles for use cases including peak shaving, load shifting, frequency regulation, and grid support.
    • Coordinate integration of BMS, EMS, and SCADA with third-party monitoring and control systems.
    • Model hybrid renewable configurations (Solar + BESS, Wind + BESS, Microgrids) for performance and stability analysis.
  • Technical Review & Quality Assurance
    • Review design deliverables, studies, and drawings prepared by junior engineers or consultants to ensure technical accuracy and alignment with project requirements and management-defined timelines.
    • Lead value engineering and design risk assessments to optimize performance, reliability, and cost.
    • Ensure all deliverables comply with IEEE, IEC, UL, CEA, and other relevant codes and standards.
    • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning for key components such as batteries, inverters, transformers, and PCS.
    • Engage with OEMs and vendors to review technical proposals, provide feedback, and technically qualify offers before handover to SCM for commercial finalization.
  • Documentation & Cross-Functional Coordination
    • Prepare technical specifications, scopes of work, BOMs, design basis reports (DBR), and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Collaborate with civil, solar PV, mechanical, automation, and O&M teams to deliver integrated and constructible engineering packages.
    • Provide design clarifications and technical support during procurement, installation, and commissioning phases.
    • Maintain and continuously update engineering templates, standards, and knowledge repositories for internal consistency and training.
    • Participate in pre-bid engineering, preparing BOQs and design inputs per tender requirements, attending pre-bid meetings, and resolving technical queries to enable compliant bid submissions.
  • Mentorship & Technical Leadership
    • Take ownership of complete BESS project lifecycle — from pre-bid design through detailed engineering, installation support, and as-built documentation.
    • Mentor and guide junior engineers in design methodologies, simulation techniques, and compliance standards.
    • Lead peer reviews, design validation sessions, and internal knowledge-sharing workshops.
    • Contribute to the standardization and digitization of engineering processes, improving team efficiency and project consistency.
    • Stay abreast of emerging battery technologies, hybrid architectures, and evolving global standards in the energy storage domain.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or any other relevant higher education
  • Experience:
    • 5–9 years in BESS/Solar PV electrical design, including residential, C&I, and utility-scale projects.
    • Strong background in battery technologies, PCS, MV/LV switchgear, and protection systems.
    • Proven experience in design review, validation, and mentorship.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in ETAP, AutoCAD, Homer, or similar tools for system design and analysis.
    • Knowledge of IEEE, IEC, IS, UL standards, and battery-specific regulations.
    • Understanding of battery lifecycle analysis, degradation modelling, and performance evaluation.
    • Strong understanding of bi-directional inverter control, AC/DC coupled systems, and hybrid system integration.
  • Preferred Attributes:
    • Experience in hybrid solar PV+BESS or microgrid design.
    • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
    • Ability to lead multiple design workstreams, mentor junior staff, and deliver high-quality outputs under tight timelines.
