Job Description

Title: Sr. Design Engineer / Design Engineer/Jr Design Engineer

Location: Ahmedabad

Role Overview

The Design Engineer – BESS will be responsible for preparing, reviewing, and optimizing electrical designs for Battery Energy Storage Systems across C&I, and utility-scale applications.

The role focuses on electrical system design, component selection, SLD preparation, and documentation, supporting senior engineers in delivering robust and compliant BESS designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Electrical System Design & Support
    • Assist in the design and development of electrical systems for BESS projects, including microgrid, standalone, and grid-connected configurations.
    • Support battery sizing and capacity estimation based on load profiles for residential, commercial & industrial (C&I), and utility-scale applications.
    • Prepare and update Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), cable schedules, and protection schematics under supervision of senior engineers.
    • Support the layout and design of battery enclosures (cabinet, containerized, or building-integrated), ensuring mechanical and electrical compatibility.
    • Assist in transformer and cable sizing calculations, and understand switchgear configurations up to 33 kV.
    • Gain familiarity with Power Conversion Systems (PCS), AC/DC coupling arrangements, and bidirectional inverter principles.
    • Learn to interpret and apply EMS, PPC, and SCADA system architectures for control and monitoring of BESS systems.
    • Contribute to the preparation of Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and technical documentation.
    • Develop basic understanding of round-trip efficiency (RTE), energy throughput, and system performance parameters.
  • Modelling, Simulation & Analysis
    • Support battery performance modelling and sizing simulations using tools such as MATLAB, HOMER, ETAP, or DigSILENT.
    • Assist in dispatch and operational simulations for use cases such as peak shaving, load shifting, and grid support.
    • Help analyse battery degradation, efficiency, and lifecycle behaviour using manufacturer data and modelling tools.
    • Participate in hybrid system studies (Solar + BESS, Wind + BESS, Microgrids) under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Technical Review & Quality Assurance
    • Prepare and organize design documentation, vendor datasheets, and compliance checklists for internal review.
    • Assist in reviewing vendor drawings, offers, and specifications, ensuring alignment with project standards.
    • Support factory and site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT) by collecting data, observing procedures, and preparing test reports.
    • Learn to apply relevant codes and standards such as IEEE, IEC, UL, and CEA for energy storage systems.
    • Participate in value engineering discussions, supporting technical evaluations and comparative analyses.
  • Documentation & Cross-Functional Coordination
    • Prepare technical documents, including equipment specifications, design basis notes, and reports.
    • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, automation, and electrical teams to ensure integrated design packages.
    • Provide technical assistance during procurement and installation, resolving basic design-related queries.
    • Support in maintaining and updating standard design templates, drawings, and internal databases.
    • Contribute to pre-bid documentation by assisting in BOQ preparation, drawing compilation, and tender compliance checks.
  • Learning, Mentorship & Professional Development
    • Work closely with senior and lead engineers to gain exposure across the full BESS design lifecycle—from concept to commissioning.
    • Participate in internal knowledge sessions, training programs, and design reviews to strengthen technical capabilities.
    • Take initiative to learn new tools, software, and standards related to energy storage and hybrid renewable systems.
    • Demonstrate proactive engagement in project discussions and continuous improvement efforts.
    • Uphold safety, quality, and documentation standards in all engineering deliverables.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering or any other relevant higher education
  • Experience:
    • 2–5 years in BESS electrical design across residential, C&I, or utility-scale projects.
    • Familiarity with lithium-ion battery technologies, inverters, PCS, and MV/LV systems.
    • Knowledge of electrical codes and standards (IEEE, IEC, IS, UL).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Homer, ETAP or similar electrical design tools.
    • Understanding of battery sizing, system schematics, and electrical layouts.
    • Ability to analyze battery lifecycle, degradation, and performance parameters.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft office tools.
  • Preferred Attributes:
    • Strong communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.
    • Exposure to residential, C&I, and utility-scale BESS applications.
    • Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple design packages under supervision.
